In a recent article titled “Unqork well positioned to be New York’s next tech giant” (subscription required), Crain’s New York Business interviewed CEO Gary Hoberman and explored the transformative power of Unqork’s no-code development platform.
The article by Crain’s reporter Ryan Deffenbaugh details how Hoberman made the jump from his role as CIO at MetLife to founding Unqork and taking the lead in this disruptive class of software (and how the “Q” in the company’s name saved “about $500,000 in domain-name costs”).
No-code isn’t just another development tool; it’s a new development paradigm that replaces an editable codebase with an intuitive drag-and-drop UI in which users (or “Creators” as Unqork refers to them) build applications by configuring repeatable components representing user-facing elements and back-end application logic. By eliminating the need to write code, companies are able to accelerate development times and open the process to business teams as well as less-experienced IT staff.
While Unqork’s has worked with some the world’s largest and most innovative enterprises (including Goldman Sachs, John Hancock, and Liberty Mutual to name a few), the article singles out the public sector as being particularly ripe for disruption and highlights Unqork’s work helping the city of New York mount a rapid—and robust—digital response in the early days of the COVID pandemic.
“The de Blasio administration turned to Unqork for a website that would allow residents to self-report Covid-19 cases,” Deffenbaugh wrote. “The city also relied on Unqork to build an application that routed out-of-work yellow-cab and ride-hail drivers to deliver meals to low-income New Yorkers. Both programs were designed and launched in a weekend.”
