Unqork at Work: Michael Duke, Director – Engineering

Work & Impact

The Highlight Reel: What’s the coolest project or problem you’ve tackled at Unqork so far that made you realize,“Yep, this is why I love working here.”

Forming the IDE team in January ’26 and completely rebuilding our IDE experience from the ground up, adhering to the promise of “parity plus”—meaning everything that ever worked at Unqork continues to work while being natively AI-driven. It was a unique and intense challenge, but incredibly rewarding. Having the opportunity to drive that level of impact on the platform is rare.

The Evolution: What strategies helped you reach the Director level, and what has been most rewarding about watching your team grow?

Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to work within high-functioning teams that serve as models for how I operate today. Early on, Unqork listened to and supported my suggested improvements. In terms of growth strategies, I firmly believe in building something you are proud of—if you show up every day with rigor and care, I guarantee it will be noticed.

When I transitioned into management, I leaned into leading by example as a pacesetter, as that was the style of leadership I appreciated most as an IC. Leading this way naturally builds trust, and once trust and mutual respect are established, a culture of success follows. Seeing my teams buy in, care deeply about the product, and support one another has been the most rewarding outcome of my time here.

Culture & Fun

The Vibe Check: How would you describe the vibe of the Unqork engineering team in just three words?

Runtime: Resilient, Cautious, Optimistic. IDE: Aspirational, Fast, Steadfast

Unqork After Hours: What’s your favorite Unqork memory, team tradition, or casual moment that shows off the fun side of our culture?

I’m a big fan of our company onsites—last year’s laser tag, games, and food were a great way to connect with colleagues from all over the world.

The “Secret Sauce”: What’s one piece of advice for someone joining the team?

Be humble and take time to learn the product’s history, but above all, stay inquisitive. Bring fresh perspectives to the table and always make your voice heard.
